Suddenly, a sound rang through the night that would render all other happenings irrelevant. A scream. A blood-curdling scream.
In a friendly place like Drovill, it was inordinately out of place and rendered the patrons and staff of On the Avenue completely silent. The world stood still for a moment as not an individual made a sound, straining their ears listening for any other sounds of context. None came. In a flash, the restaurant burst to life as those within clambered and fought their way out the door, some purely worried or curious, others hoping to help. As they tumbled out, a crowd was beginning to gather around…the victim: a Koltherian male, in half-form, bleeding out from a laceration to his throat. There was a low hum amongst the growing number of individuals as they fished around for information. Someone said they saw a human running from the scene, another contradicted the claim.
The question sat heavy on everyone’s minds: just what had happened here, and was anyone else in danger?

A shudder ran up and down Kestrel's back at the thought of some deranged Kolther running around slitting throats. What the hell?! Such a peaceful evening and suddenly someone was dying in the street! Kestrel's ear flickered as someone claimed that a human had done it, and her head turned to where the taller fellow was with his pet. He'd want to keep her hidden if there was talk of this...the athlete pushed her way through the crowd to get a closer look, crouching down to try and hold pressure on the bleeding wound. Maybe the vet could help him! But she felt that maybe he wouldn't make it in time, this male looked like he was on his last leg of the race.

Word had spread fast of the event, and within moments an electronic device snug in her beltpack was blaring with the alert on new criminal activity that had dared to boldly present its self within a peaceful community. A faint toothy grin formed on Viper's maw where a bent up cigarette stuck out from one side between clenched fangs; the Kolther was quick to become animated as she whipped her leg over the motorcycle, kicked back the kickstand and sped off with a loud roar of the bike. As luck would have it, she did not have to drive far for the little sub-city of Drovill was just outside the Orita district limit, but a frustrated scowl came under her breath when the large crowd of Koltherian surrounding the scene finally came into sight. In attempt to break through the disoriented crowd, Viper revved up her vehicle in a threatening manner.
"Back off my wheels or I'll run your asses over," she barked out in command. The frightened Koltherian stepped aside, out of the range of the fast approaching vehicle.

Kestrel looked up at the sound of growling and the hum of a motorcycle. Her ears twitched curiously, but as the new face approached, she had a gut feeling she had something to do with the law, and Kess didn't want to get in the way of that. She backed up as the female rode up, but didn't step as far back as the other by standers had done. She still had a hand on the male's throat, hesitant of removing the pressure. There was still a pulse, weak as it was. She wasn't a doctor, so she couldn't tell if she was even helping, but if it was she didn't want to risk moving and letting him die. Though with how much blood there was, she wasn't sure if she'd even be able to notice if his heart had stopped...

Once again, interrupted in the middle of a conversation, Squash perked his ears towards the commotion. However it was obvious this time that this wasn't an interruption he could complain about. This was serious, very serious. He excused himself from the vet's table as he wandered his way to the front window of the diner. He had to politely move his way through people and had to wait for some of the 'audience' outside to move out his line of sight before he managed to catch a glimpse of what exactly was causing the commotion. "Oh!" Squash gave a horrified little exclamation into the hand he had clapped over his mouth, his yellow eyes wide and full of concern. Immediately his gaze went to Moray and Autumn, and met his tall friend's gaze. He was incredibly upset. The big orange Kolth didn't handle these sort of things very well in the first place, but he'd heard what the other Kolther's outside were saying about the scene, and there was Autumn...A Red. Which most blame easily, without second thought. This situation was becoming more and more concerning.

"Hey!" the same voice snapped at the female knelt beside the victim.
Viper came into full view mere moments later where she proceeded to park her bike along the fringe of the crowd. "You there, medical assistance will be arriving shortly, so keep doin' what you're doin' whether or not we got any chance of saving this man," Viper continued in a notably calmer tone right up until she had finished with bob tailed kolther, afterward turned abruptly toward the crowd, her expression clearly one of scorn. "This is now a criminal investigation! All witnesses will remain within the vicinity while the rest of you daze-struck fuckers either move out, or lend this lady a hand!"
With that Viper moved her focus back to the victim. The young kolther knelt beside Kestrel, and wasted no time in ripping off a section of her own tank to place over the victim's throat, which for the time being would at least be somewhat more effective than just the work of two hands. She slid the cloth underneath the bob tailed kolther's palms. The man was clearly in an altered state at this point, teetering on the edge of unconsciousness. Viper tried in vain to elicit some coherent response from the man, but all the victim could manage were weak gargled chokes.

This was uncharacteristic and uncalled-for in a place like Drovill, and Moray’s heart stirred with fear; a rare thing, at that. He wasn’t afraid for his life. He didn’t live in paranoia of a dangerous stranger wandering the streets. He was afraid of the rumor quickly speeding through the crowd.
“I saw a human leaving” quickly became “a human fleeing”, then “a human did this”. Moray was afraid of the growing consensus and what such conclusions could mean for the young, red-chipped, human woman by his side. Instinctively, he tried to shield her from view, and keep to the outskirts of the crowd. Squash was soon with him, a tad terror-stricken and straining to meet his tall friend’s gaze. Moray caught it and held it, the pinprick of worry gleaming in his eyes. Squash caught on faster than anyone he knew, and now they were two, worried for Autumn’s safety amongst a growing mob. Autumn dropped her habit of being mouthy or annoying. She was more than clever enough to assess situations and act accordingly; her typical demeanor out in public was mostly bratty and manipulative, but harmless (a big turn-around from when Moray had acquired her). She took subtle cues from her owner and his friend, and tried to remain hidden as they all attempted to duck out of the scene.
Any hope of being able to leave easily was suddenly lost, drowned in the roar of a motorcycle and a stream of demanding, foul language. Moray saw her first. Viper was the respondent. Of all the Koltherians it could have been, it was her. He groaned out loud and in frustration. Autumn on the other hand, heard the voice and was brought out of hiding via her very poor impulse control.
Moray and Viper had a history…specifically one involving highly clashing views on mankind. Initially, she had paid him a visit when Moray’s business and advocacy efforts had begun to take wing. He had April then, who was terrified and on her best behavior in all subsequent visitations made by the bounty hunter because Viper had made one thing clear: if a human steps out of line, she will be there.
Autumn was nothing like April. In fact, Autumn pretty much thought that nothing existed cooler than Viper. Autumn’s first run-in with Viper was literally a run-in, followed by a profanity-laden exchange, and Moray getting the reprimanding of his life (and that’s saying something since he lived with his uncle Mello for much of his childhood). After the ordeal, Autumn was smug and smitten, much to her master’s dismay.
“Maybe she hasn’t seen us,” he whispered to Squash and held Autumn closely and firmly. “Maybe we can still just slip back into the restaurant—“. The declaration of a criminal investigation. A call for all witnesses to remain. There really was no hope of quiet escape. Everyone who had heard the initial screaming and any potential eye-witnesses remained in place as the mob began to disperse, many of them eyeing Autumn suspiciously and whispering to one another. Without the crowd, Moray felt extremely exposed.
The dying Kolther, now in the throes of death, seized and sputtered under the hands of Viper and the stub-tailed Koltherian from the eatery, before finally relaxing. The charges jumped from assault to murder in an instant. The paramedics pulled on scene, a little too late, and worked with the body. The dead man’s hand fell open, revealing a small red chip glowing dimly in the night.
Human involvement confirmed.

The spines along Kestrel's body bristled as she felt him slip away under her hands. It was...unnerving and frightening. Someone had just DIED in her hands! As the paramedics arrived and announced the man dead, Kestrel stepped back. Blood dripped from her fingertips as her hands fell to her sides and she stood on the foreword ring of the mob, watching the new arrivals begin to move the body. Evidence now of a murder crime committed on the streets of Drovill. Her ears were lowered as she stood there, unsure of her involvement now. Her green eyes flashed to Moray and Squash, a human peeking out from behind them. Maybe she could leave? She wasn't exactly a witness, she'd only been trying to keep this man alive. If she could leave and sneak the human away with her, the slave's master wouldn't have to worry about her anymore. She bit her lip, but stayed where she was. She didn't want to raise Viper's suspicions.

The Orange Kolther made his way to Moray's side, but not before glancing back at the commotion, and catching sight of the newcomer. It didn't take long for him to recognize Viper, what with her cigarette and motorbike. Not to mention the serious and somewhat ominous air that came with her. Though he'd never met her personally, he'd heard enough about her from both Moray and Autumn alike, though they did seem to have very different things to say about her. Of course this would be the circumstances that he'd be meeting her under.
The uneasy Squash huddled close to his friend as well as Autumn, trying desperately to come up with something...anything to help ease the intense edge of this situation.
"L-Look...The..." He swallowed hard and tried to straighten up as he looked back at the scene, which he'd finally gotten a good look at, however he still felt nauseated, "..The Kolth out there has a chip in his hand...Autumn still has her's right? There's no way they'll blame her..." He tried to reason out-loud, turning to glance up at Moray. He knew that her direct involvement would only scratch the surface of the situation they'd found themselves in. Viper, at least the Viper that Squash had pictured in his head from the tales he'd been told, would probably make a fuss over Moray and Autumn...Though he hoped she wouldn't go as far as to incriminate either of them. He'd never let that happen however. Not while he had six eyes still left in his head.
What a unfortunate 'welcome home' this was turning out to be. He swallowed uncomfortably and shifted, wrapping his tail around his ankle as he continued to think and come up with something clever. He was clever...surely there was some way out of this. He just needed to think.

The scene sped up in a whir of confusion. The man convulsed, gaping for breath, but the outflow of blood had long choked his system. The victim's fleeting life rushed away as he went limp under Kestrel's form. Viper took a step back and scowled; her prime witness was dead. Her gaze was brought back to the bob tailed lady who seemed at a loss of what to make of the situation. Within moments the loud blaring of sirens would drown out all other course of thought. The paramedics had arrived but soon to their dismay they would find that they had came just a little too late.
Viper took control once again. She confronted the head and in a hushed tone relayed a basic description of the victim's condition coupled with a thorough reminder of protocol. The kolther in command was quick and to the point, as she had more pressing matters to attend to.
She approached Kestrel from behind and gave the bob tailed kolth a firm pat on the shoulder. "You know you can get up, go wash off those bloody hands while the paramedics get to work... Yeh did fine," Viper remarked in admiration of the kolther's drive to take action while the rest of those fools just stood there and watched.
The paramedics were now preparing the body to be removed from the scene, but upon shifting the corpse something had caught her attention. Viper's eyes locked on the victim's one clenched hand having just unfurled to show a glowing red chip. The cig fell right from her mouth as the kolther's expression contorted into a full out snarl. She knew for certain now that a human had been involved in this crime, and it enraged her to think that the dangerous red chipped fucker was running free within the peaceful sub-city. Even the emergency medical team backed off in fear of the harsh words she had readied for them.
Viper knelt down and picked up the chip from the dead man's palm. This would narrow the search down a good bit, she concluded; now it just came to identifying the red responsible and pinpointing their whereabouts. The kolther knew a good majority of them, and had access to all the files including the ones that she had yet to encounter through visit. Was this man even it's owner, though? She did not recognize him. If not, Viper was hoping the witnesses would shed some light on the incident. She whipped around to the dispersing crowd.
Upon lighting up another cig, Viper was just about to speak up when she caught eye of the tall kolther in the back making an effort to stay hidden from view. Moray became instantly recognizable after all the past visits she had bestowed upon him, and Viper knew that Autumn was bound to be with the man as well. "Look'it that, what terrible chance you had to end up here to be witness to such a gruesome crime, right Moray?" Her voice stung him; even in all the surrounding commotion it came clear as day. Within an instant, Viper was upon him and his little group. Autumn had poked her head out from behind and was now leaning out of Moray's protective hold. She'd had this strange admiration of the kolther ever since their first run in, but Autumn's bold actions often got her in quite a bit of trouble. Viper's intense gaze now laid on the girl, and any satisfaction she had from pinning Moray into a corner quickly diminished in sight of Autumn. Just seeing the human girl pissed her off to no end.
"You know what I have to do now, Moray. Your human comes under automatic suspicion whether or not she had anything to do with the crime," Viper stated coldly. "Now show me your arm, Human, the one with your embedded chip."
(Also, gosh I really adore that sketch piece of the scene you did, Skolly <3)
